Thyroid Gland

The thyroid gland, usually configured like a butterfly, lies below the larynx adjacent to the trachea. The crucial element for the synthesis of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) is iodine. It is absorbed in the intestine through food and is accumulated in the thyroid gland. The daily iodine requirement of humans is about 150 µg. Thyroid function is controlled by the pituitary gland. This produces TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), which has an activating influence on hormone production in the thyroid gland as well as hormone release into the bloodstream.

The clinical examination findings, hormone analysis, ultrasound and possibly a scintigraphy, usually ordered by the general practitioner, provide indications of thyroid diseases. In our special consultation, we decide with you on the basis of the findings about the next step and a possible operation.

When is thyroid surgery necessary?

Surgery is indicated in the case of

  • a diagnostically justified indication of a cancer disease
  • enlargement of the thyroid gland leading to difficulty in swallowing and breathing and a feeling of pressure in the throat
  • hyperthyroidism that cannot be adequately treated with medication or radioiodine therapy is not possible or not desired

What surgical methods are possible?

  • open surgery (conventional)
  • minimally invasive surgery (keyhole technique)

We have many years of surgical experience and place the highest value on a functional and cosmetic result that is optimal for you.

Neuromonitoring          Dr. Petersen

In our operating rooms with highly specialized technology, we have the latest procedures,
such as constant vocal cord nerve monitoring (neuromonitoring) during surgery.

The use of magnifying glasses with 2.5x magnification makes it easier and more precise to dissect the fine structures (vocal cord nerve, parathyroid glands, vascular branches).

If necessary, a frozen section analysis is performed during the operation.
